A Day out in Donegal

Donegal is a substantial town in the south of the county. It's full of wonderful pubs, great shops and even has its own castle. A river winds its way through the town and out past the ruined  abbey  to Donegal Bay.
The day we went it was relatively fine but cold. The temperature at its max reached about 6 degrees.
We had decided to have a light lunch as we were planning on a meal at a pub in the evening, unable to find a cafe we ended up with seafood chowder at a local pub overlooking the river. The seafood chowder was just as it should be, creamy with its fair share of scallops and mussels. They make a brown bread here which they seem to always serve with meals. I think it is an acquired taste - it's a little closer to cake in taste and texture than it is to bread.

Donegal Castle is right in the centre of town standing on the banks of the river. The Irish Government has spent a bit of money restoring it to its former glory. The castle is a 15 th century dwelling,  home to the O'Donnel Clan, and like a lot of castles has seen its share of different owners.

Out of a fairytale

The shopping was  wonderful, warerford crystal, beautiful china, lovely linen, clothes, shoes and things not seen before in Australia. I guess I could do another  carry on bag on the plane. Come to think of it,  I know Himself is travelling light, so whats one more bag for him to carry,  in the scheme of things.

Townhouses in Donegal

You may be forgiven for thinking we had done a quick detour to New York. I snapped this photo of this 2 metre statue in the front yard of a home on the way to Donegal.
